Obituary* | an unknown newspaper; "The death of Kenneth Forbes Ellis very well known and highly regarded citizen of Summerside, occurred at his home here on Saturday evening. The late Mr. Ellis, who was 82 years of age, was born in Summerside , son of the late Captain John and Mrs. Ellis. At an early age he went with his parents to Liverpool, Eng., and attended school there. Capt. Ellis was deep-sea captain and for many years sailed between British ports in the East India trade, later removing with his family to Summerside. On coming to Prince Edward Island Mr. Kenneth Ellis attended a private school in Charlottetown, at that time conducted by Rev. Hodgson. When he left school Mr. Ellis entered the mercantile establishment of Weeks & Beer, as a salesman. After some time in that employ, he left to go to sea, and spent several years as an officer in sailing ships, visiting many ports of the world. Following this, he entered the employ of Sinclair & Stewart, Summerside, and later was for a short time in business with the late W. K. McGougan. Later, he was a salesman with R. T. Holman, Ltd. Mr. Ellis will be remembered by his friends as much travelled, a voracious reader, with a wonderfully retentive memory and a genial companion. He was a charming and entertaining conversationalist, a factor which contributed much toward making him very popular with customers during his days as a salesman, and was at all times a gentleman. He is survived by his widow, one son, Reginald E. Ellis of Summerside, and five daughters, Miss Lorna, RN., at home; Mrs. B. Graham Rogers and Mrs. H. M. Baker in Summerside; Mrs. Chester Haen of Rhinback , NY., at present at home; and Miss. Myra Ellis of Morristown NJ., also two sisters, Mrs. Netus Stanlake and Mrs. R. L. Romcke to all of whom much sympathy is extended. At the funeral, which was held Monday afternoon, Rev. Walter McCleary conducted the services at the house and at the grave. Pall bearers were Percy Crosby, E. E. Parkman, E. P. Foley, Heath Strong, H. T. Colvin and D. F. Baker.; Spouse=Lucy Stewart, Son/Parent=Reginald Evans Ellis, Parent=Capt. Hannah Darby
F, d. 4 February 1891
Anecdote* | A young man paddled a canoe across Northumberland Strait from Buctouche, N.B. to ask Hannah's father for her hand in marriage. When Hannah learned of her father's consent, she said, "If I'm to be wed, I'll be courted" and refused to marry, whereupon the young man married one of her sisters. This is where the Ellis stubbornness is supposed to come from. [Author's note: This story has come down many of the families related to the Darbys. It is impossible that this was Hannah, as the man in question seems to have been William Hanington who married Hannah's sister Mary before Hannah was even born.]

John Ellis followed the predilection of his family for the sea, and was one of Summerside's best known captains. In the course of his voyages to Greenock, he wooed and won a bonnie lass, Margaret Potter, but he very nearly ruined his chances with the old folk by telling them that the surface of the harbour in front of his home became so solid in the winter time that a string of race horses could gallop over it. They were somewhat dubious of entrusting their daughter's future to a captain who could yarn in this fashion."; Principal=Margaret Potter

Comment* | 9 July 1976 | I will also see what records for the town of Bideford are in the Devon Record Office although it would be rather hoping for too much to find the original log book of the National School with John Ellis. ... I did wonder if in fact our Robert is connected with the Ellis who is prominent in the above book, whether he came out being a relative, also why did he return to Bideford? Was it for John's education, but Bideford National School was not exactly one of the great schools of England, or even Devon! It was built in 1825 and had 200 children. The National Society was Anglican of course.; Witness=Robert Ellis |

Anecdote* | "...built his house on the north side of the road where Mr. Lea's fox ranch is now [in 1920's] situated. They were somewhat dubious of entrusting their daughter's future to a captain who could yarn in this fashion."; Principal=Capt. John Ellis
